a community problem

community role in cutting crime
what this year's crime audit has really done is underline the social impact of youth crime and the damage caused by teen gangs. it shows how police, particularly those in south auckland, face a new wave of crime while they fight methamphetamine. in hamilton, a youth gang fight claimed the life of dylan jenkins last november. his crime was to wear the wrong colour bandana. the court stories told of the rival east and west side factions – groups with nothing worth fighting over, but prepared to fight to the death over it. south auckland has been dogged by tit-for-tat battles between gangs who in august were killing themselves at a rate of one a week.
waikato's top policeman, disappointed with the waikato result, also raised social issues this week. superintendent kelvin powell said the crime results did not belong to the police alone, they were the community's results. he called on the public to be more vigilant and report crime. he has also recently overseen the return of six staff to the hamilton east station. in south auckland police already have more people on the beat to tackle the gang crisis which has claimed six lives this year. regardless of how the latest figures are digested, the answers to reducing crime are not confined to a police budget. crime in new zealand is alive and well – but crime busting, welfare tactics and community action have still knocked it back almost 20 per cent in 10 years. whole article .....
i live in naenae in the the hutt valley, wellington region. recently, we have had a drive-by shooting and two stabbings. both involving the mongrel mob and the black power. both very public, with innocents standing around. as naenae tries it's damndest to keep up with south auckland regarding youth crime, i can only point out that it is indeed, a community problem. until the community puts a stop to youth crime, we will have to put up with it and the effect it has on us.
